There are nine major universities in Illinois that are recognized as “National Universities” using the conditions established by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Among them are the University of Chicago, Northwestern University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Illinois Institute of Technology, all of which were ranked in the top 100 National Universities in the country by U.S. News and World Report. Other major Illinois universities include Loyola University Chicago and Illinois State University. The Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama attended the University of Chicago Law School before serving in the Illinois Senate from 1997 to 2004. He is now the 2008 U.S. Democratic presidential nominee.
