The biotechnology industry began in the 1970s based, for the most part, on new recombinant DNA practices, and is now one of the most highly researched industries in the world. Biotechnology is a $30 billion a year industry – $19.8 billion was spent by the U.S. biotechnology industry in 2005. From this research, more than 160 drugs and vaccines were created, and over 370 biotech drugs and vaccines are currently in clinical trials targeting health issues such as cancer, Alzheimer’s, heart disease, AIDS, and arthritis. In the U.S., there are 1,473 biotechnology companies, 314 which are publicly held.
