Website Lists Companies In Financial Trouble (Florida News Network)

BOCA RATON, FLA. — With the tough economy looming like a dark cloud, many people wonder if they will have a job from day to day.

One Boca Raton based business said it’s time for Floridians to get ahead of the game and not wait for the company memo to find out whether you may have a job or not.

Jim Swift is the CEO of Cortera, a website that lets you in on where your company stands now before they shut the doors or don’t send you a check. And Swift said that out of those 600,000 small businesses that shut their doors, only 59 had filed for bankruptcy.

“A lot of times businesses just close their doors. They don’t go through the process of filing a bankruptcy, which is a process that gives you some remedy to get paid,” Swift said.

According to Swift, most small businesses closed their doors without a notice to their employees. Now, he said, people can be given a heads up to prepare.

“You don’t want to be surprised if a business just suddenly picks up and closes. So, what we do is we try to provide information to small businesses in particular and consumers who want to get a better understanding of the risk associated with the businesses that they deal with,” Swift said.

Swift’s website allows people to learn where their company stands whether they are employees or just doing business with them. He said it’s extremely important for consumers and businesses, especially in this economy.
